Ryan had discovered that his father, John (Joe Tippett), was also the father of Erin's baby. Indeed, the central mystery of the series - who killed Erin McMenamin? - had an answer that matched a theory that had been laid out with impressive accuracy in some circles, even if some of them had then (understandably) dismissed it.įor in the end - and really, truly, this is your chance to tag out before we begin discussing the ending - the answer was that young Ryan Ross (Cameron Mann), the son of Mare's (Kate Winslet) best friend Lori (Julianne Nicholson), killed Erin. Let's get right to it and talk about some questions that were answered in the Mare finale. There were only so many characters, and it (fortunately) didn't seem like the kind of show that would pull in a random new murderer at the end, just for the sake of making sure none of the online guesses had been right. There was so much speculation about the mysteries of HBO's Mare of Easttown that it seemed like no matter what the ending was, it would be something that someone guessed at some point. You absolutely should not read it if you don't want to know what happened, as that's what it's about. This is a discussion of the final episode of this season of Mare of Easttown. "It absolutely helps.Kate Winslet as Mare on Mare of Easttown. They help you get over yourself, they make you feel good, it's great for the kids," Winslet says. And if nothing else, the awards were a reminder of how much we all wanted another season. There's still hope for more Mare, even if it's not in the way we expect it. So I'd have to really think that through, 'cause sometimes you have to look after your own mental health and things like that."Įven if she isn't the lead to another season, Winslet is still executive producer, meaning the suspenseful show won't lose its edge just because she's not the face of it. I had to take this year off, did a little therapy, truly I've taken a minute to put myself back together. "It would be a lot to consider because, honestly, it was so hard," she says. She added she'd have to give some serious thought to taking on the role again, which required a lot of her. There are lots of ideas floating around, but I think until there's a script that we can all look at and take a view of, is it another story worth telling or not, then we don't know. Remember, too, that HBO is famously willing to reverse course on that 'limited series' label Big Little Lies was such a big hit that despite initial plans to be a one-and-done, it was back only two years later with a Season 2 (and Season 3 has now been hinted at as well).Īfter the 73rd Emmys, Winslet spoke with Entertainment Tonight where she revealed there are talks happening for a potential second season."The truth is, I don't know, honestly, I don't know," Winslet says. But if she's interested in another Season, it sounds like the showrunner could be as well. Winslet, who was not only the star of Mare but also an executive producer as well, is obviously a busy and in-demand performer. But after the recent Emmys, Winslet has given us a bit more detail about whether or not there's more to come. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson didn't for True Detective, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon (initially) didn't for Big Little Lies, and the list goes on.īut Mare has become such a big hit that it's fair to ask the question of whether or not Winslet and company could be convinced to come back for more (the show was planned as a limited series).Īnd the answer, as of now at least, is a resounding we don't know. When you're a performer the caliber of Kate Winslet (who plays the titular small town detective, Mare ), you're not typically going to sign on for a TV show more than one season at a time. Kate Winslet, Evan Peters, and Julianne Nicholson all won for their performances, and the show won for production design.Īnd after that, it's fair to wonder one simple question: when will we get more? Which.is a tricky question. Mare of Easttown ended up with four Emmys. From shocking twists to cliff-hanger mysteries to the stunning conclusion, Mare did this show pretty damn perfect.Īnd it looks like awards season reflected how much viewers loved the show. Following in the footsteps of shows like True Detective, Big Little Lies, and Sharp Objects before it (and similar to other HBO shows like Perry Mason, The Undoing, and The Outsider), Mare told the story of a gritty, dark, single-season murdery mystery-and picked up a massive following along the way. HBO's latest miniseries, Mare of Easttown, started off quiet, but quickly became the prestige cable network's biggest hit of the year.
